A Berlin, quelque temps après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Lene Winter s'occupe de son amie Nelly Lenz, une chanteuse juive, survivante des camps, défigurée. Après une reconstruction faciale, Nelly se voit proposer par Lene de partir refaire sa vie en Palestine, où un terrain leur a été attribué. Un soir, alors qu'elle erre dans les rues de la ville dévastée, elle croise furtivement Johannes, dit «Johnny», son mari. Alors que Lene doit partir en Pologne, Nelly veut en savoir plus sur l'attitude de son mari pendant la guerre. Petzold trouve une approche originale pour évoquer l'Allemagne d'après-guerre dans ce film à l'excellente interprétation.
