Un restaurant sert de couverture à Roger Sartet, le chef d'une bande de gangsters redoutables. Le caïd finit par se faire arrêter après un cambriolage raté. Son futur gendre, un ex-chanteur vedette, prend provisoirement la tête du gang avec un objectif urgent : obtenir par tous les moyens la libération de Sartet. Un kidnapping lui paraît la bonne solution pour parvenir à ses fins. Il fait enlever un joueur de football qui se trouve être le frère du commissaire Le Goff, le chef de la . L'affaire est rondement menée. Mais Le Goff n'est pas homme à céder au chantage. Toute son équipe se mobilise pour faire échec aux gangsters. Ce petit polar, très typé années 60, ne paye pas de mine à première vue mais se révèle plus intéressantque prévu. Son efficacité boit beaucoup au tandem Robert Hossein, Raymond Pellegrin et à toutes les " belles gueules " de cinéma convoquées pour jouer les seconds rôles.
